When is Crab Season? Great Crab Dinner Party Invitations

Red Crab on the Shore Invitation

Red Crab on the Shore Invitation

No matter the occasion, a birthday, an anniversary party, or a rehearsal dinner, seafood is a favorite theme for a dinner party.  When is crab season and what kind of crab should you select?

It is said that Maryland produces the finest crab meat from the famous blue crab. The peak of the season runs from July through November. The blue crab (Callinectes sapidus), has a rich, sweet and succulent flavor.  In Maryland, crab meat must be steamed rather than boiled which results in better tasting crab meat with a longer shelf life and because it contains less water weight, the consumer gets more crab per pound.

There are three types of Alaskan King Crab – Red (most sought out and know for its sweet meat), Golden (smaller and more abundant, and Blue (tends to have large claws.)

Dungeness crab season opens in November.  Dungeness crabs are particularly prized for their sweet, firm, succulent meat and often served with sourdough French bread and a bottle of Chardonnay wine in San Francisco.

So whatever your occasion, send a terrific seafood theme invitation then join friends and family in enjoying a fabulous seafood dinner.

If you or your child is lucky enough to have a birthday around Halloween, you have another theme to choose from when planning a birthday party.

Dance in the Moonlight Halloween Invitations

Dance in the Moonlight Halloween Invitations

Kids love to dress up in their Halloween costumes and getting to wear them more than once is a real treat.

Choose your favorite Halloween invitation and be sure to send it with enough time so guests can plan to attend.

You can make your home a Haunted House for Halloween and serve creepy foods and drinks. You might also want to have some food that kids recognize and will actually eat if your party is around the lunch or dinner hour.

If the birthday party is actually on Halloween, you can plan to have some parents stay and trick or treat your neighborhood as a group before the party starts.

Goodie bags with spiders and Halloween trinkets, and even more candy, will delight guests.

Be sure to be prepared to take lots of photos and video the event so you can enjoy the replay without the chaos.

Monster Movie Marathon & Scary Invitations

Thrillerman Halloween Party Invitation

Thrillerman Halloween Party Invitation

Slumber parties are not just for girls or for birthdays!

A great pajama party idea for girls and boys is a monster movie marathon. Choose the scary movies you want to show, get permission from guest’s parents that they approve their showing, then pop the popcorn, serve the pizza and get ready for some screaming. If your guests are young, show cartoons with their favorite monster characters.

Halloween is a great time for this kind of party. After trick or treating, everyone can change into their pajamas, grab their pillows and settle in for a fun night of screams, giggles and candy overload.

Low Carb Cosmopolitans & Bachelorette Party Invitations

September 3rd, 2010
Martini on Hot Pink Invitation

Martini on Hot Pink Background Invitation

Cosmopolitans are a great drink for a bachelorette party, a lady’s birthday party, hey, who needs a reason? They’re fun, they’re festive, and they’re pink! Unfortunately, they are loaded with sugar, typically 4 teaspoons in each drink.

Here’s a low sugar/low cal recipe that tastes just like the high calorie version.

  • 1 jigger (1.5 oz or 3 tablespoons) Citron vodka or regular vodka (nutritional analysis uses 80 proof)
  • 1 oz (2 tablespoons) diet cranberry juice (NOT “light” — it must say diet) OR 2 teaspoons unsweetened cranberry juice and 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice (fresh squeezed preferred)
  • 2 to 3 drops orange extract
  • 2 to 4 teaspoons sugar equivalent in artificial sweetener (to taste), liquid preferred

Put all ingredients in a cocktail shaker half-full of ice and shake well. Taste for sweetness. If you are using unsweetened cranberry juice, you may need to add more sweetener. Strain into a Martini glass and garnish with a small lime wedge or curl of lime peel.

Enjoy!

How do you clean dusty candles before a party?

September 3rd, 2010
Holiday Candles and Cones Invitations

Holiday Candles and Cones Invitations

I have lots of candles I use for decoration and I never intend to light them. I’ve noticed that they get dusty and dull looking.  How do I clean them? Here’s a few ideas:

  • Rub them with pantyhose.
  • If the candle has designs, use a cotton swab soaked in water to clean the grooves.
  • Use a lightly damp cloth to wipe the candle clean.
  • DO NOT use cleaning products as most are highly flammable and can soak into the wick.

What type of candles should you burn? According to Care2.com, beeswax.

“Beeswax candle fuel is the only fuel that actually produces negative ions, which not only helps remove pollution from the air but increases the ratio of negative ions to positive ions, the ideal and necessary scenario for clean air.” In laywoman’s terms, this means they cause charged gunk (dust, pollen, odors, toxins, etc.) to fall from the air onto the floor via static electricity.”

As we come into the holiday season, be sure to safely burn all candles.
