Are you Dreaming of a White Christmas?

Monday, December 20th, 2010

Snowman and Wife Winter InvitationsChristmas cards, Christmas specials, or Christmas carols, one thing that  seems to be a universal message is the presence of snow. Glistening snowflakes and snowy white lawns have become as much a part of the Christmas message as anything. Perhaps it is because it looks so bright and pure or because it makes the scene immediately identifiable as a winter one, and therefore links it to Christmas. But there are many people in the English-speaking world who have never seen a White Christmas, and wonder if they will.

The chance of a white Christmas depends, of course, on where you live.  Here in Southern California, our home is high enough in the Saddleback Mountain foothills that we have had snow three times since we’ve lived here. While it was short lived and only once did we have enough snow for a mini snowball fight, it wasn’t at Christmas.  This year, we’ve just had days of rain which while needed, isn’t what we or tourists expect in Southern California at Christmas.

Snow Surfer Winter InvitationIn the Southern Hemisphere, Australia has Christmas in the middle of its climatic summer. Australia is a temperate country anyway, so the chances of snow at Christmas are roughly equivalent to those of a 100-degree heatwave in New York in January. Even in the United Kingdom, which is known for its cold winters, snow tends to hold off until January for whatever reason. Though cold enough, the snow just doesn’t seem to have that sense of timing.

Nonetheless, whether you live somewhere that gets snow reliably at Christmas or somewhere where it is unlikely to ever happen, the fact remains that snow is something that is inextricably linked with Christmas. This holds true wherever you are, and is why we all know what Bing Crosby was singing about.

How do you add a Personal Touch to Your Party?

Monday, December 20th, 2010

Black Filigree Gift Party InvitationHow do you make it personal? Party planners and hosts want the same thing when making plans for one-of-a-kind parties such as a bridal shower, baby shower or a milestone birthday party. Adding a personal touch may be easier than you had imagined.

Party invitations set the tone for your event. What are you celebrating? Is it a casual or formal event? The perfect invitation lets guests know what to expect and entices them to attend your party. Make sure you choose an invitation that builds excitement for your party and guests can’t say “no” to.

If your invitation has a theme or favorite color, continue it through the decorations. For a bridal shower, use the bride’s chosen wedding colors. For a baby shower, pink and blue with touches of brown or green are popular.

Make your centerpiece a stand out. Centerpieces can consist of anything that fits into the theme of the event. Flowers in your chosen colors are always beautiful. Clear jars or bottles filled with candies or chocolates are a visual and mouthwatering delight. Seasonal or delicious fruits such as whole cranberries, grapes, sliced lemons, oranges or limes with floating votives in water add splashes of color.

Party favors in the same theme or colors as the rest of the party-such as candles for a party that relies on them for decoration, bags or small decorative glasses filled with candy and individually tied with ribbons and a “thank you” tag. For any party, how about passing out lottery tickets?

How do you Set a Budget for Your New Year’s Eve Party?

Sunday, December 19th, 2010

Champagne and Fireworks InvitationsIf you’ve decided to have a New Year’s Eve party, you’ve probably already given some thought to a budget for your party. Not having a budget or going over budget on your party can cause significant financial strain and stress and put a damper on your festivities.

Your goal is to throw a great New Year’s Eve party but you do not want to go into considerable debt to do so. The best way to have a successful New Year’s Eve party is to set a budget based on the amount of cash or credit you have available and work within that budget to create the most spectacular New Year’s Eve party possible. Once you have set your overall budget, you can set individual budgets for each element of your party.

Some individual elements to consider when planning your New Year’s Eve party are invitations, location, decorations, entertainment, food, beverages and incidental items. Prioritize your list to determine which elements are most important to you so you will have an idea of how to distribute your available funds.

For example, you may consider the New Year’s Eve invitations to be important as they set the tone for your event and a fabulous invitation entices guests to attend your party. If your invitation doesn’t impress your guests, your turnout could be less than spectacular.

The Top 7 Tips to Help you Plan a Surprise Birthday Party

Saturday, December 11th, 2010

Geezer Surprise Birthday Party InvitationPlanning a surprise birthday party can be very fun and enjoyable for all of the people who are involved. And, if you and your co-conspirators can keep up the charade until the party happens, then you can have one very surprised and happy guest of honor.

Even though the secret of your surprise party depends on all of the people who have been invited, there are some simple things which you can do to help ensure the best outcome possible.

Here are seven tips to get you started to planning a surprise party which your friends and relatives will be talking about for years to come:

1.  If the surprise birthday party is for someone other than your spouse, find out from your guest of honor, or even better from their significant other, what their schedule is like within the time frame you are considering for the surprise party. Use this valuable information to set the date for your surprise party.

2.  Enlist the help of someone who can devise a fictitious activity for the guest of honor to partake in on the day of the party. The closer to your home this activity is, the easier it is for your helper to “have to stop in at your home for a moment” on the day of the party.

Social Media Invites vs. Printed Party Invitations

Monday, December 6th, 2010

Tiki God Luau Party InvitationParty invitations might be easier to send by email or a by flyer created from your home computer, but if you want people to get excited and actually come to your party, sending custom printed party invitations win hands down.

Snail mail has its advantages, one being privacy, the other being that a custom printed invitation lets guests know you have taken the time to do it right. Beautiful invitations also build excitement and anticipation from the moment guests open them and social media just can’t duplicate that feeling.

Unless you are promoting a business event, using social media as a means to invite party guests to a personal event is a risky proposition.

If you should get the urge to use Twitter or Facebook as the source of your event invitations, be careful. Are you really inviting every one of your social media followers to your party? You could end up with an out-of-control number of party guests, “followers” that are really “in-the-flesh strangers,”  or a lot of hurt feelings from unread posts or non-follower friends being left out if you rely on social media as your main source of inviting and relaying party details.

Shh Surprise Party InvitationDon’t forget that Twitter messages are public and they can be seen by anyone at anytime, even total strangers.  To see this yourself, from your Twitter account, run a search on the word “invitations” or “party.” Your screen will be filled with “non-followers” tweets. Even more amazing is the “Tweets Near You” function. With one click, the world’s tweets have just been narrowed down to “near” your location. For your safety and the safety of your guests, resist the urge to tweet or post your personal address, email, phone number, party location, date and time.

The same safety issue applies to Facebook. While you may have made your Facebook “Wall” private, some of your most “private” information is not blocked from a stranger’s view. With a few clicks through any Facebook page or any “friends” page, a stranger can view all the personal bio details you have posted on your Facebook Info tab. The info fields Facebook has made available include:  your sex, your birthday, your children, siblings, parents, grandparents, aunts/uncles, your relationship status, anniversary, hometown, religious views, contact information – email address and/or website links, likes and interests, education and where you work, plus what you are looking for with your Facebook page such as friendship, networking, etc.  The Facebook Photo and Video tabs are also viewable by anyone and photos can be “tagged” with names of the individuals in each photo.  A completed Facebook Info tab might contain more information than your parents, husband or best friend ever knew about you and the information is available to anyone who logs in to Facebook whether they have “liked” you or not. Be careful if you decide to post your party invitation or any party details on your wall. (more…)

Christening Invitations for Your Baby’s Christening Day Celebration

Monday, December 6th, 2010

Flourish on Blue Boy Christening InvitationBabies are adorable in their special christening or baptism outfits chosen with love for the ceremony.  A wonderful addition to the christening outfit might be a blanket, bib or a bible that the minister could bless and then can be added to a keepsake box for the child.

When planning your special christening or baptism day, first, before ordering christening invitations, decide on a budget and the size of your guest list.  Confirm the date with the important people in your child’s life, grandparents, favorite aunts and uncles, cousins, etc., before you set the date with the church.

Decide if you will have a reception following the baptism or christening ceremony.  If you want a reception at a banquet hall or restaurant, reserve it for your date and time as soon as you have confirmed the same with the church.  If you are having a reception at your home, decide if it will be indoors or out (make allowances for bad weather.)  If you will have the food catered at your home, reserve the date with the caterer and a time to look over their selections and to place your order.  Do you need to rent tables, linens, chairs?  If you would like the services of a photographer, musicians, and entertainers, book them as soon as possible.

Once your christening date, time and reception location have been confirmed, it is time to order the christening invitations.  There are christening and baptism invitations available for all budgets and styles.  You can include a separate RSVP card or include a response line on your invitation.  Mail your invitations up to eight weeks prior to your event.  “Save the Date” cards are a great way to give out-of-town guests prior notice of your christening or baptism celebration or a simple phone call will be appreciated.

Flourish on Pink Girl Christening InvitationUnlike the child’s birthday party or other social events, the invitations to a baptism or christening will go to guests of all ages.  The overall theme should reflect not only the child, but the invited adults.  During an adult cocktail hour, you might want to have activities for the children, but remember, they will probably be dressed in their best “church clothes”.  If the baptism or christening party is for an infant, you might want to enlist the services of someone to watch the baby while you mingle with your guests.  With all the family attending the affair, it shouldn’t be a problem to find a willing sitter.

At least a day before the party, make sure you have charged your video camera battery and have checked your still camera batteries or digital camera memory available.  Make sure you have plenty of video tape and film set out in plain site so you know where it is when you need it!  Some disposable cameras sitting around for your guests to also capture the action can yield some of the best pictures of you, the parents, with your child.

And most important, enjoy this special day with your child.

Caring for your Holiday Poinsettias

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

Caring for your Holiday PoinsettiasThe length of time your poinsettia will give you pleasure in your home is dependent on:

  1. the maturity of the plant,
  2. when you buy it, and
  3. how you treat the plant.

With care, poinsettias should retain their beauty for weeks and some varieties will stay attractive for months.

  • After you have made your poinsettia selection, make sure it is wrapped properly because exposure to low temperatures even for a few minutes can damage the bracts and leaves.
  • Unwrap your poinsettia carefully and place in indirect light. Six hours of light daily is ideal. Keep the plant from touching cold windows.
  • Keep poinsettias away from warm or cold drafts from radiators, air registers or open doors and windows.
  • Ideally poinsettias require daytime temperatures of 60 to 70°F and night time temperatures around 55°F. High temperatures will shorten the plant’s life. Move the plant to a cooler room at night, if possible.
  • Check the soil daily. Be sure to punch holes in foil so water can drain into a saucer. Water when soil is dry. Allow water to drain into the saucer and discard excess water. Wilted plants will tend to drop bracts sooner.
  • Fertilize the poinsettia if you keep it past the holiday season. Apply a houseplant fertilizer once a month. Do not fertilize when it is in bloom.
