4th of July Barbecue Ideas

My husband loves any excuse to barbecue and 4th of July is no exception.

Ribs is one of our all-time grilling favorites. These Apple-Glazed Baby Back Ribs are to-die-for!  Serve them with corn, coleslaw, Wild Harvest Organic Blue Corn Tortilla Chips and salsa and you’ve got a great holiday menu.

For dessert, I love the look and taste of the Patriotic Parfaits. Easy to make ahead and no trouble to serve so you can lay back and get ready for the fireworks.

And don’t forget to send fun invitations to your guests!

Blue Sparkling Star Cocktails

I’m not sure I’ve ever had a blue cocktail before – don’t think I’ve ever ordered a Blue Hawaiian, and I have to say, the blue of the Blue Sparkling Star Cocktail is amazing! These would be so pretty for a holiday party or New Year’s Eve celebration!

Blue Sparkling Star Cocktails

Ingredients:
2 ounces orange infused vodka
2 ounces blue curaçao
Champagne

Instructions:
Rim 2 champagne glasses with blue cocktail sugar.
Pour 1 ounce orange infused vodka into each of the prepared champagne glasses.

Invitation says “Festive Holiday Attire,” What is it?

Saturday, September 30th, 2017

It is always helpful when a host prints the expected mode of dress on the invitation, but with holiday invitations stating “Festive Holiday Attire” and “Holiday Chic” it’s not always easy to decipher exactly what that means.

Some invitation clues can help you decide what type of dress is expected.

  • What’s the occasion?
  • What time of day is the party?
  • What’s the location?
  • How many guests?
  • Is it an evening cocktail party at a five-star hotel or drinks and appetizers at your neighbor’s home?
  • Is it formal or informal?

Women's Festive Holiday Attire Dress Code

If an invitation states “Festive Holiday Attire”, here are some guidelines:

For Women:

Add a bit of holiday color and sparkle or beading to your outfit.

Nice black pants or simple black skirt with a red silk blouse or cashmere sweater or sweater set, nice dressy flats or pull out chic pumps. No out-of-season shoes, totally out-of-style, over worn or dated shoes – hear Jimmy Choo calling you and go shopping, it’s a party you’re going to!

Use the time of the party to guide you as to how dressed-up or dressed down you should be.

No chipped or dirty nails, go bare and buffed nails if time doesn’t permit new polish.

No overdone makeup, hair accessories or jewelry (nothing that clinks). (Dress from Boston Proper)

Men's Festive Holiday Attire Dress CodeFor Men:

Add some holiday color to your shirt – a deep burgundy or dark forest green, nice dark dress pants (usually stay away from khakis or light colors).

It’s a party, wear something besides jeans, but dark well-pressed perfect jeans if you think they are appropriate.

Nice leather shoes, no thick rubber soled clunkers – think GQ, and dark socks (cover the calf), Men's Festive Holiday Attire Shirtmaybe red or green holiday pattern depending on the time and location of the party.

For evening and for warmth, wear a nice sport coat and leave the large cable knit sweaters in your closet. (Entire look from Men’s Wearhouse – wear burgundy shirt instead of white shown for a holiday touch.)

Fashion Faux Pas:

Always make sure your clothes are clean and pressed – no worn, frayed, faded or stains anywhere.

No missing buttons, unraveling anywhere or broken zippers.

Make sure you are comfortable – ladies, can you sit down, bend over, reach for the appetizers without a wardrobe malfunction?

Nothing too slinky or sexy, no straps or underwear showing, you might have to see these people at work on Monday.

4th of July Poprocks Firecracker Cookies

Sunday, June 11th, 2017

4th of July Poprocks Firecracker CookiesWhether it’s for Memorial Day or the 4th of July, we seem to be on a mission to find the coolest red, white and blue, items and ideas to celebrate America.

I have to say, the Pop Rocks Firecracker Cookies are a hit with kids of all ages!

Not sure what Pop Rocks are? Ask any kid and they’ll tell you all about them, in great detail.

These might look like pretty cookies decorated with cute little sprinkles, but wait until you bite into one!

The unsuspecting guest that mindlessly pops one these babies in their mouth is a sight to behold.

The ensuing Pop Rocks explosion deserves a spot on candid camera.

Decorate your favorite cookie recipe with a touch of frosting and sprinkle with red and blue Pop Rocks.  (Strawberry and Watermelon flavors are red sprinkles.)

TIPS:

  • The moisture in the frosting will make the Pop Rocks start popping, so either put less frosting on or wait until you are about to serve them to frost and add the Pop Rocks.  My cookies could be heard across the room popping away right after I frosted them.
  • If you want to keep it a secret that you’re using Pop Rocks, put them in a container or plastic bag if you’re adding them to your cookies later or away from home.
  • If you live where it’s humid, your Pop Rocks might all be popped out before you can serve them.  By the next day, the Pop Rocks added flavor to the cookies, but sadly, no popping.

What do you need for a Kentucky Derby Party?

Saturday, March 11th, 2017

Often referred to as the “most exciting two minutes in sports,” the Kentucky Derby is run on the first Saturday of May every year at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

One year for my birthday, my husband and I went to the Derby (the year Barbero won the race).  My derby hat (below) made it onto the derby track on the head of a sports photographer.

Tips for the Perfect Poinsettias for your Holiday Party

Sunday, November 27th, 2016

Poinsettias are traditional Christmas plants that will last through the Christmas season and beyond. It is important to select the best plant for your home environment.

Tips on Shopping for the Perfect Poinsettias for your Holiday Party (and how NOT to kill them!)

The following are a few selection pointers:

■ Choose a plant with dark green foliage down to the soil line.

■ Choose bracts (modified leaves) that are completely colored.

■ Do not purchase poinsettias with a lot of green around the bract edges.

■ Do not choose plants with fallen or yellowed leaves.

■ The poinsettia should look full, balanced and attractive from all sides.

■ The plant should be 2 1/2 times taller than the diameter of the container.

■ Choose plants that are not drooping or wilting.

■ Do not purchase plants that are displayed in paper or plastic sleeves. Plants held in sleeves will deteriorate quickly.

■ Do not purchase plants that have been displayed or crowded close together. Crowding can cause premature bract loss.

■ Check the plant’s soil. If it’s wet and the plant is wilted, this could be an indication of root rot.

■ Check the poinsettia’s maturity. Check the true flowers which are located at the base of the colored bracts. If the flowers are green or red-tipped and fresh looking the bloom will “hold” longer than if yellow pollen is covering the flowers.

■ When you take the poinsettia home, be sure to have it sleeved or covered when outdoor temperatures are below 50°F.
