4th of July Poprocks Firecracker Cookies

Sunday, June 11th, 2017

4th of July Poprocks Firecracker CookiesWhether it’s for Memorial Day or the 4th of July, we seem to be on a mission to find the coolest red, white and blue, items and ideas to celebrate America.

I have to say, the Pop Rocks Firecracker Cookies are a hit with kids of all ages!

Not sure what Pop Rocks are? Ask any kid and they’ll tell you all about them, in great detail.

These might look like pretty cookies decorated with cute little sprinkles, but wait until you bite into one!

The unsuspecting guest that mindlessly pops one these babies in their mouth is a sight to behold.

The ensuing Pop Rocks explosion deserves a spot on candid camera.

Decorate your favorite cookie recipe with a touch of frosting and sprinkle with red and blue Pop Rocks.  (Strawberry and Watermelon flavors are red sprinkles.)

TIPS:

  • The moisture in the frosting will make the Pop Rocks start popping, so either put less frosting on or wait until you are about to serve them to frost and add the Pop Rocks.  My cookies could be heard across the room popping away right after I frosted them.
  • If you want to keep it a secret that you’re using Pop Rocks, put them in a container or plastic bag if you’re adding them to your cookies later or away from home.
  • If you live where it’s humid, your Pop Rocks might all be popped out before you can serve them.  By the next day, the Pop Rocks added flavor to the cookies, but sadly, no popping.

Did you Set a Snow Date for your Super Bowl Party?

Friday, January 3rd, 2014

If you believe in such things, the Farmers’ Almanac predicts a winter storm will hit New York – New Jersey February 2, 2014. Snow in February, not unusual.  Snow on the East Coast, not unusual.

Frozen Referee Super Bowl Party Invitations

The part that makes this prediction noteworthy is that the storm is supposed to hit around kick off time of Super Bowl XLVIII being held at the “open” MetLife Stadium. OK, so you’re thinking you’re glad you didn’t buy your ticket to be there in person, but there’s more to it than just crowding around the big screen and watching the game with your rowdy friends in a heated living room or bar.

It was announced on December 18th by the NFL, that in the event of a forecast of heavy snow, the game would be rescheduled for the Saturday before, or for the Monday or Tuesday after.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but how do you schedule something for the “Saturday before” based on something that hasn’t or won’t happen until Sunday? What if it is still snowing or the blizzard continues raging Monday or Tuesday? What constitutes a blizzard severe enough to affect kickoff? How does the NFL let everyone know the date’s been changed? What if you’re flying in on Saturday and the game’s played while you’re in the air?

I could go on and on, but the most important question to those of us without tickets to this “freeze your tush off bowl”, how do we schedule our warm, indoor party if there is really a chance this thing won’t happen on Sunday the 2nd?

This is not like a rain date for a kid’s birthday party. We talking major logistic issues for everyone involved from the beer salesman and the ticket takers to the fact that most ticket holders and party-goers probably have jobs and will be on the job Monday or Tuesday. I wonder how many reserved their hotel rooms through Tuesday or booked airline tickets for such a contingency plan?

Let us know what you’ve got planned for Super Bowl “sure hope it stays” Sunday or what your crazy question is.

You can arrange white pumpkins, painted white pumpkins or fake pumpkins painted white on a platter or in a basket with other size gourds, fall leaves, pine cones, or tree branches on a bed of moss.

If you add candles, try using different sizes with hurricane glass over them to add flair and keep the flame away from the items in your arrangements.

Valentine's Day Pink Brownies

I LOVE brownies and pink brownies for Valentine’s Day are an unexpected twist friends and kids will love.

1 box strawberry cake mix
2 eggs
1/3 cup oil

Mix ingredients together and spread in a greased 9″ x 13″ pan.  The dough will be thick and will spread thin in the pan. Bake at 350 for 14 minutes and test for doneness by a toothpick inserted in the center coming out clean. For pink brownie glaze, mix 1 cup powdered sugar with 2 tablespoons milk or water. Pour over warm brownies.  Enjoy!

Please come back and leave us a comment if you made these…we’d love to hear from you!
