Kentucky Derby Fashions Head-to-Toe

Monday, February 17th, 2014

Kentucky Derby HatWhen it comes to Kentucky Derby fashions, what is appropriate to wear to Churchill Downs race day will also work for Derby parties you have been invited to.

The Kentucky Derby Hat
It all starts with the hat, or at least it did for me. My trip to the Derby was a birthday surprise from my husband and friends gifted me my Derby hat. I think starting with the hat made dress shopping easier as it was much harder to find a hat than I imagined.

If you’re lucky enough to be at Churchill Downs race day, don’t think you can skip the hat and not be noticed. Whether custom-made or off-the-rack, if you’re a woman, you’ll feel out of place without a hat. If a big frilly confection is just not for you, try a fascinator that you can secure with a headband or a comb.

The Dress
The Derby is an event where you can dress to feel like a Southern belle even if you’re a Yankee. A dress is a must, but the style is up to you. As the weather can be anything the first Saturday in May, a sleeveless or strapless dress with a sweater or coat you can remove as temperatures change will be the most comfortable. (While terribly unfashionable, you will want to stuff some plastic rain ponchos in your bag in case of rain. You’ll thank me if they’re needed.)

The Shoes
Be prepared to walk and walk and walk while at Churchill Downs. I thought I had chosen comfortable shoes, but by the end of the day, the cobblestone pathways and time on my feet made me wish for a comfy pair of flip flops. If you choose to wear heels, you might want to carry a handbag large enough to hold a pair of sandals or Foldable Ballet Flats for the after-the-race walk and wait for transportation.

The Jewelry
Keep it simple. Your Derby hat will be your statement piece so you might want to go with simple gold or silver hoops or studs or pearls and a simple necklace.

The Bag
Remember our advice to carry a bag large enough to fit comfy shoes? You might want to carry a cute hip bag or over the shoulder clutch to keep hands free for your Julep, racing program or to go place your bets and a larger tote bag in a style your date won’t mind carrying that could hold binoculars, rain ponchos and your souvenir Kentucky Derby Mint Julep Glasses (yes, they are glass!) home after the race.

The Men
If your man likes to wear hats, you can go with anything that is a throwback to yesteryear or sporty fedoras that compliment his outfit. Seersucker suits are always in fashion for the Derby paired with the bright hues of spring. We love the ties from Vineyard Vines made for the Derby – Mint Julep Tie and the Run for the Roses Tie.

BONUS TIP:  BRING SUNSCREEN!
Sunscreen never crossed my mind until about an hour after I’d been in the sun and my shoulders started turning pink.  They don’t sell it (or they didn’t) at the track but I found a vendor nice enough to share some of his with me. Just throw it in that big tote your date will be carrying and you’re all set for a fabulous day at the races.

Blue and Brown First Communion Invitations and Party Ideas

Blue and brown are popular colors for a boy’s first communion.  Adding in hints of green and white with your party decorations creates a beautiful soft and elegant look to your event.  The Brown Cross invitation is printed on shimmery paper and comes with matching shimmery envelopes (available in other colors.)

We love these dessert ideas and the mints with bible verses printed on the packages are a nice touch to your tables.

Did you Set a Snow Date for your Super Bowl Party?

Friday, January 3rd, 2014

If you believe in such things, the Farmers’ Almanac predicts a winter storm will hit New York – New Jersey February 2, 2014. Snow in February, not unusual.  Snow on the East Coast, not unusual.

Frozen Referee Super Bowl Party Invitations

The part that makes this prediction noteworthy is that the storm is supposed to hit around kick off time of Super Bowl XLVIII being held at the “open” MetLife Stadium. OK, so you’re thinking you’re glad you didn’t buy your ticket to be there in person, but there’s more to it than just crowding around the big screen and watching the game with your rowdy friends in a heated living room or bar.

It was announced on December 18th by the NFL, that in the event of a forecast of heavy snow, the game would be rescheduled for the Saturday before, or for the Monday or Tuesday after.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but how do you schedule something for the “Saturday before” based on something that hasn’t or won’t happen until Sunday? What if it is still snowing or the blizzard continues raging Monday or Tuesday? What constitutes a blizzard severe enough to affect kickoff? How does the NFL let everyone know the date’s been changed? What if you’re flying in on Saturday and the game’s played while you’re in the air?

I could go on and on, but the most important question to those of us without tickets to this “freeze your tush off bowl”, how do we schedule our warm, indoor party if there is really a chance this thing won’t happen on Sunday the 2nd?

This is not like a rain date for a kid’s birthday party. We talking major logistic issues for everyone involved from the beer salesman and the ticket takers to the fact that most ticket holders and party-goers probably have jobs and will be on the job Monday or Tuesday. I wonder how many reserved their hotel rooms through Tuesday or booked airline tickets for such a contingency plan?

Let us know what you’ve got planned for Super Bowl “sure hope it stays” Sunday or what your crazy question is.

You can arrange white pumpkins, painted white pumpkins or fake pumpkins painted white on a platter or in a basket with other size gourds, fall leaves, pine cones, or tree branches on a bed of moss.

If you add candles, try using different sizes with hurricane glass over them to add flair and keep the flame away from the items in your arrangements.

Inbox vs. Mailbox Party Invitations

Inbox vs. Mailbox Party Invitations

When is the last time you got really excited about a party invitation that arrived in your inbox instead of your mailbox?

Ever?

Never?

Is it really necessary to mail paper party invitations to your guests?

A better question would be, “How many guests do you want to show up at your party?” Or “How serious are you about your event and who attends?”

We’ve all received invitations by various methods:

  • In casual conversation: “Come over Saturday, we’re celebrating John’s birthday.”
  • Phone call: If you didn’t write it down, did you forget? Did you feel like a last minute guest at a last minute party?
  • Facebook event: Did you even see it or do you just automatically delete all Facebook events? Did the hosts invite their entire Facebook following?
  • Twitter: Really?
  • Evite:  Confess, you look at who’s going to decide if you’re going or if the party is a dud. Did you print it out? Write it down? Grab your calendar?

With paper invitations in the mail, guests think:

  • Wow! I’m important to them
  • The hosts care about their event enough to mail invitations
  • I better RSVP (yes, reply rate is higher with paper invites)
  • This is important to my friends, so I’m going

A paper invitation sets the tone for your party. Make sure your invites convey the effort you are putting into throwing a great party and choose the mailbox over the inbox for a great party turnout.

Thursday, July 25th, 2013

I was wondering why our kraft favor boxes webpage was getting so many visits, and after some investigating, we discovered our kraft boxes were on Martha Stewart!

How exciting!

Featured in a stunning spread on Hilary and Kyle’s New York City wedding, we were thrilled to see how beautiful their favors were. Hidden in the box is Champagne jelly made by the mother-of-the-bride. Sounds yummy.
